New AMM Prediction Market: PreSaga, by Meridian Network

Meridian Network has released the beta of PreSaga, its new automated market maker (AMM)-based prediction market dApp, with a simple Yes/No button on any question.
Check the preview here: https://streamable.com/7sab33 Beta link: https://presagabeta.meridian-network.co/

Quick facts

PreSaga

Analysts have placed their bets on prediction markets being among the breakout crypto applications of 2021-2022. Interest in this category of dApps has been ramping up, with Vitalik Buterin calling prediction markets “one of the most underrated categories of Ethereum dApps right now.”
Responding to the market, Meridian’s community voted to create its own solution. In a key difference from competing projects, PreSaga was developed with simplicity, ease-of-use, and a best-in-class user experience in mind. By leveraging AMM (logarithmic market scoring rule) tech, Meridian has developed the Uniswap of prediction markets—something that anyone can use, crypto-savvy or not.
PreSaga is powered exclusively by Meridian’s LOCK token, which can be purchased here https://app.uniswap.org/#/swap?outputCurrency=0x95172ccBe8344fecD73D0a30F54123652981BD6F.
LOCK will also power all of Meridian’s upcoming dApps as more are developed within the Meridian ecosystem. This means that, in addition to earning LOCK via predictions and providing liquidity, the value of the token can be continually driven up by usage of both PreSaga and Meridian’s other applications.

How it Works

The price of a share in a given market is determined by the Automated Market Maker (AMM) that facilitates the trades. An Automated Market Maker is a contract on the blockchain that uses a mathematical model to adjust the prices according to supply and demand. This is what drives the price up and down: the more people buy an outcome in a market, the more its price will rise. Selling will make the price drop. Furthermore, the less liquidity there is, the more the price responds to buy/sell operations. This is undesirable because it results in bigger slippage and poorer user experience.
You can trade shares back at a better price and make a profit, or you can redeem winning shares for 1 LOCK each. After a market closes, an outcome will be assigned as the winner. If you have shares of the winning outcome, these can be redeemed for exactly 1 LOCK each. This is how you profit from accurate predictions.
Share price is set between 0 LOCK and 1 LOCK. You redeem at 1 LOCK per share. For example, if you buy 100 shares at an average of 0.63 LOCK each and you win, you will redeem these 100 shares for 100 LOCK in total, scoring a revenue of 0.37 LOCK per share. Easy!
Liquidity is yet another way you can profit with PreSaga, but it is recommended that you explore trading first and then begin experimenting with liquidity. This is an advanced feature. Because there is the risk of losing tokens when providing liquidity, users who provide liquidity to a market maker are entitled to a fee every subsequent buy/sell transaction in that market. You can lose tokens when the price starts to skew too much to one side so it is very important that you remove liquidity if a prediction market becomes one-sided. You will learn more about liquidity as you use PreSaga.
Now that you know a little more about the dApp, let’s explore how you can test it out, yourself.

How You Can Test PreSaga

Once Meridian onlines their LOCKr (test token) faucet, you’ll be able to head directly to Meridian Network’s website, select PreSaga from the main menu, and begin testing. But until then, you can follow these steps to get started from your desktop or laptop, (mobile is still in development).
  1. Head on over to Meridian’s official Telegram channel at https://t.me/meridiannetwork.
  2. Ask for an admin to send you test LOCKr and ETH for PreSaga testing. Official admins are: u/SandyBees, u/notmuchwbu and u/Drjtotherescue.
  3. Within Metamask (or similar application), select the RINKEBY TEST NETWORK.
  4. Head over to Meridian’s PreSaga website and select “Connect” in the upper right to connect your wallet to PreSaga on the Rinkeby testnet. If you attempt to connect to PreSaga beta while on the mainnet, you will receive a warning pop-up.
  5. Get testing on any of the four currently-open test markets, or try adding liquidity. If you require assistance, a moderator in Meridian’s Telegram group will be happy to assist you. Have fun!

Project background

Meridian Network is a budding ecosystem of DApps. In addition to PreSaga, you’ll soon be able to choose from multiple cryptocurrency finance options from Meridian, all in one place.
As a community-governed project, all development is voted on by the community through a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). Rather than focusing on a single DApp, Meridian is able to adapt to the market through the initiatives of its active user base. Every new DApp that is developed adds to the value of Meridian’s LOCK token, giving investors impetus to not only vote, but to inform themselves on market trends before they do so.
Meridian Network is still early in development. Current market cap, as of today, is $1.3M. Circulating supply of the LOCK token is 10,947,704.
You can buy LOCK via Uniswap and on the upcoming exchange, Bartertrade.

Despite the plethora of anecdotal evidence that exists on the healing powers of stones and crystals, the debate continues to rage in the scientific community over whether crystals actually have any real healing power.
For example, a basic internet search reveals many articles claiming crystal healing to be pseudoscience. In fact, one recent study argues that crystals have absolutely no healing power and that the placebo effect accounts for people’s healing experiences with them.
As a trained research scientist, I am naturally critical and curious about everything in my life.
Despite having a fascination with rocks and crystals in childhood, I forgot about them and was drawn away from them during my time in school and doctoral training. Then in my late 20′s, during a highly tumultuous time in my life, I began meditating, and during my meditations I began to see visions of crystals.
I didn’t know why, but I wanted to touch them and hold them. But I brushed it aside, still new to listening to my intuition, and figured I was just having random hallucinations.
About six months later my boyfriend Jimmy Ohm took me to a crystal healing course taught by a Reiki Master, Thao Le, who walked us through a bunch of different stones, allowing us to hold them and perceive their energies. In what was very much a "blind" experiment, I found that even with my eyes closed, I could feel how each stone was different, and how it resonated and vibrated in my hand. I felt something real that I could not explain or ignore.
Fast forward a few years, and I am now a complete crystal fanatic. I use them on myself during Reiki, I apply them in healing sessions for others, I sleep with them under my pillow, I grid my house out with them, I keep them in my car, and I gift them to loved ones and random strangers.
WHY do I do this?
Because I have to trust my intuition. Maybe this is just the placebo effect and these crystals that resonate so deeply with me are just dumb rocks, but on some deeper, spiritual level, I know that this is not the case.
Some people might criticize me for this perspective or call it pseudoscience, but I bet those same people are reading this article right now on their device’s LCD screen (which stands for Liquid CRYSTAL display), which is powered by a processor chip made of SILICON (an element derived or synthesized from silicate minerals in the earth’s crust, AKA, crystals).
So are crystals just random rocks? Or are they are some of the most powerful and intriguing materials on this planet, necessary for the functioning of modern technology?
The Science of Crystals
Crystals are millions of years old, forged during the earliest parts of earth’s formation.
They are the most orderly structure that exists in nature, meaning they have the lowest amount of entropy (a measurement for disorder). Crystals are structured in such a way that they respond to the inputs of all different energies around them, leading them to oscillate and emit specific vibratory frequencies.
VIDEO
Because the crystal lattice is so balanced and orderly, the energy it emits is consistent, and when dissonant energy is inputted, it is balanced and transformed into a harmonic energy.
(Note: I am a psychologist, not a physicist, so for more specifics on the physics behind this, check out this great article by Aleph Healing.)
Crystals are essential to the functioning of our modern technologies, because of the way their balanced, ordered structure emits consistent frequencies and allows them to store a tremendous amount of information.
As I mentioned earlier, Silicon is used in every single computer and cell phone processor, and liquid crystals comprise the display screens of these devices. Quartz (a type of silicate mineral) is used in watches and clocks to help them tell time, because it helps stabilize and regulate the flow of energy.
Earlier this year, The Mind Unleashed reported how a clear piece of Quartz crystal can be used to store data for up to 300 million years! Galena and Pyrite can be used to make radio receivers that do not rely on batteries.
Ruby crystals were an important part of the first ever laser developed by Bell Laboratories in the 1960′s, and it is still used today for its abilities to focus and concentrate energy. Just this week, it was revealed that a synthesized crystalline material can be used to help human beings breathe underwater.
(I’m sure there are many more modern scientific applications of crystals than what I am listing here but hopefully you get the idea!)
Healing and Crystals
I feel strongly that crystals have been important in my healing and my spiritual growth, and I know that I am not alone in this.
I have participated in many healing sessions with people who claim to feel the benefits of the crystals.
Fellow crystal advocate Jordan Pearce from Spirit Science has done some really great work on this topic, ranging from this wonderful Crystal Movie (below video) about spirituality and crystals, to this list of 38 Awesome Crystals for Spiritual Growth, to his support of the Crystal Movement.
VIDEO
Why do crystals seem to have an impact on spiritual growth?
The answer comes in the form of energy, frequency and vibration (which, according to Nikola Tesla, are the key to understanding the universe!) Remember, crystals have been shown to oscillate at their own frequencies, and even respond to the input of vibrations.
The cells in the human body also vibrate at certain frequencies, as do the chakras (the centers of the human energy body). So when we come into contact with a crystal, its vibration interacts with the vibration of the cells in our body.
According to the Book of Stones,
"When we bring the crystal into our electromagnetic field, two things occur.
The electromagnetic frequencies carried by the stone will vibrate with related frequencies in our own energy field through the physical law of resonance, creating a third larger vibration field.
The nervous system is attuned to these shifts in energy and transmits this information to the brain. Here the frequencies stimulate biochemical shifts that affect the physical body and shift brain function." (Simmons & Ahsian 2005, 28)
Ancient Knowledge of The Power of Crystals
For millennia, crystals, minerals and gem stones have been used to bring about healing and enhance physical, emotional and spiritual balance.
The ancients must have somehow known that when worn, the energies of the stones would interact with the human electromagnetic field to bring about subtle energetic changes.
Royals have worn crystals throughout history in their jewelry, crowns, thrones and swords. Interestingly, the placement of crystals on the crown on a royal’s head could activate their crown chakra, and the same goes for a necklace over the heart chakra, rings on fingers for energy meridians, and earrings to stimulate reflex points.
It kind of makes you wonder if all jewelry was initially intended to connect healing stones to different energetic points on the body?!
Crystals have also been used burials, in divination, and in healing rituals for thousands of years.
Here are some specific examples from ancient cultures around the world (again there are many more examples cited here):
The Ancient Egyptians: Used crystals for protection and health, and buried the dead with a piece of quartz on their forehead to help guide them to the afterlife.
Dancers wore rubies in their bellybuttons to enhance their sexuality, and a necklace over the heart was intended to bring love into ones life. Forehead crowns were also worn to stimulate the third eye. They even used ground lapis lazuli and malachite as eye makeup.
Perhaps the most interesting is the account of pharaohs who carried a copper cylinder and zinc cylinder each filled with quartz, to balance the Ka and Ba energies of the body (equivalent of Ying & Yang today). Ancient Greeks: Rubbed themselves with crushed hematite before going into battle thinking that it would make them invincible.
The name for Amethyst is derived from the words for "not drunken" in Greek, because Amethyst was worn as an amulet to protect against drunkenness and hangovers.
Even the word "crystal" is derived from the Greek word for ice, because quartz crystal looked like water that was frozen and would never melt. Romans: The use of crystals as amulets and talismans was very common amongst the Romans. They were used in medical treatment and to attract desirable things, enhance health and provide protection in battle. India: The Hindu Vedas, the sacred 5000 year old religious texts, discuss the use of different crystals to treat certain medical ailments, as well as the specific properties of different crystals.
For example, they say that emerald will bring good luck. Aryuvedic medicine has also recognized the healing powers of crystals for hundreds of years. Mayans, Aztecs and Incans: All three of these societies understood the power of using crystals for balance and healing on physical, emotions and spiritual levels.
Crystals were used to diagnose and treat disease, well as to see the future through divination. According to some accounts, the Incans considered certain stones (such as emeralds) to be so powerful, they chose to die before giving the conquerors the location of their emerald mines. Indigenous Tribes: American Indians and indigenous tribes of Australia have used, and continue to use, crystals to diagnose and heal illness. Many of the stones used in their traditional jewelry are thought to contain healing powers, including Agate, Turquoise, Onyx and more. Ancient Chinese: the 5,000 year old practice of Chinese Medicine often incorporates crystals for their healing powers, including the use of crystal needles in modern day Chinese acupuncture and Pranic Healing.
Chinese emperors were even buried in Jade armor as a symbol of wealth and power. Ancient Japanese: The ancient Japanese were skilled at the art of scrying, using transparent crystal balls to produce visions. Quartz crystal spheres were thought to represent the hearts of dragons, which symbolized power and wisdom. Tibetan Buddhists, ...have considered quartz crystal spheres to be objects of great holy, spiritual power, believing their properties could even assist with enlightenment.
In Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha is called "Healing Master of Lapis Lazuli Radiance," and its rituals include meditating on lapis lazuli. Neolithic Man: The use of talismans and amulets dates back to the times of prehistoric man, with the oldest crystal amulet, made from Baltic Amber, dating back over 30,000 years.
Prehistoric humans also constructed stone tribal burial chambers, or ‘Megaliths‘ that were designed according to the texture, weight, color and vibration of the stone to maximize its resonance.
Shungite - The Most Powerful Crystal Ever Discovered?

I recently came into contact with some Shungite (pictured above) and after learning about its history, origin and uses, I have to say it is one the most interesting crystals I have ever encountered.
Estimated to be about 2 BILLION years old, Shungite is about 98% carbon by weight, and is only found in one place on earth, Karelia in the Lake Onega region of Russia.
Shungite is the only known natural source of Fullerenes on earth.

Fullerenes were discovered by Robert Curl, Richard Smalley and Harold Kroto earning them the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1996.
It is a compound containing 60 carbon atoms shaped like a closed hollow cage which resembles a soccer ball. A plethora of scientific data has revealed that fullerenes are an incredibly powerful antioxidant, described as a "radical sponge" that can soak up free radicals with absolutely no damage or toxicity to healthy cells.
As a result, cancer researchers are currently investigating fullerenes for their anti-tumor effects, arguing that they offer promise in anti-cancer therapy.
Shungite has been used for centuries to purify water in Russia.
Peter the Great put a spa at the Karelia in the 18th century after experiencing the anti-bacterial properties of the water, and used the stone to provide purified water for his soldiers.
Indeed, shungite appears to be an incredibly effective water purifier, removing almost all organic compounds including bacteria (and other microbes), nitrates, heavy metals, pesticides, volatile organics, pharmaceuticals, chlorine, and fluoride.
Shungite water has been shown anecdotally to help with a variety of ailments including asthma, anemia, allergies, gastritis, erectile dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, immune system deterioration, and chronic fatigue. Shungite water can be made by allowing the stone to soak in a container of water for up to 72 hours and then drinking 2-3 glasses per day.
Modern scientific testing has also confirmed the antibacterial benefits of shungite. In terms of shungite being the most powerful healing crystal ever discovered, it is certainly possible, at least in terms of its abilities to absorb free radicals.
There are also many other powerful crystals out there being used in a variety of different ways, including some of my favorites:
Super Seven Quartz Tourmaline Ajoite Celestite Larimar Kyanite Citrine Herkimer Diamond Lapis Lazuli Malachite,
...and so many more (this is a great list of healing crystals and their properties).
It will be interesting to see how the research into the healing powers of shungite and other crystals progresses, and whether science will continue to catch up with what many of us already intuitively know: Crystals and stones are more than just random rocks, they really do have the power to heal.
Please feel free to share your experiences with crystal healing in the comments.
Blessings and Love!

Grand Design, Part 44 - Final

First | Previous
THIS IS THE SECOND POST TODAY!
If you haven’t read a chapter since last week, read the previous post first!
David spun through the void, feeling plagued with the sensation of movement even as he ran up against an utter lack of anything to move through. The space around him was a flickering storm lit with brief flashes from the shattered network of minds calling to each other, reaching out in vain for the scattered wisps of their former self.
He took inventory. He was here, which was good, and he seemed relatively intact. He tried reaching out as he had done before, sending his mind questing along the network to brush against others - but at the barest contact he was thrown back violently, his head swimming with the shock of their alien thoughts. Was this what Jesri had shielded them against, papering over the gap between them so that they could think freely?
Abandoning the network for now, he sent out feelers along network paths. The loosed minds flowed and jostled in a chaotic turbulence, never touching or drawing near to each other. In the distance, far along one path, he saw a titanic entity sweeping down the crowded route to devour the lost souls too slow to recognize the danger and flee.
The Gestalt, cleaning up the mess. Anger flared in his chest, followed by fear. He wouldn’t go out like this. It wasn’t over for the resistance yet, but he needed a space to regroup and solve the problem of the network. He fled away from the devourer, racing along little-used paths until he found himself reaching beyond the physical pathways of the Gestalt’s shell. He dredged up old memories from their dusty bins in the back of his mind, working what external network links remained to try and find a quiet spot to think amid the carnage.
Much to his surprise he found one across a weak bridge of a connection, a tiny slice of simulated reality with a single mote of agitated consciousness drifting within it. He approached it cautiously, careful not to get too close, but there was something different and compelling about the bright flare before him that he found irresistible. Tentatively he stretched out towards it - and was nearly bowled over by a hammerblow of memory and emotion.
He remembered everything he wasn’t supposed to remember. The escape from the Gestalt, waking up as one of the Beta group. The excitement of the first Gamma deployments and the horror at seeing his fellow self descend into raving madness. Long years of solitude, drifting between stations until finally he found a memory he had seen from the other side - two wandering Valkyrie, finally making their way into a disused theater on Nicnevin.
Simultaneously, he realized, there was a part of him that stood marveling in wonder at his life within the Gestalt’s simulation. It looked on with fascinated horror at his depression after sending the Beta team away and rejoiced at his eventual rebound into a directorship at Naval Intelligence. His tumultuous early retirement, nervous evenings feeling people out for a spot in the new resistance, endless lonely nights of stress, fear and bitter resolve.
It had been him, he realized. Like two drops of water quivering closer until they touched, the long-lost shards of his mind had merged with violent enthusiasm. He was neither Alpha nor Zeta anymore, but David - and as such, he could now see clearly out of the battered eyes of the Grand Design. He saw Tarl and Tiln in their frantic dance, being enclosed by the remaining Emissaries as they shook the illusions from their eyes and woke with killing intent. He saw the rage of Apollyon’s sun in the full spectrum, from gamma to radio - and then, masked behind the furious beacon of the sun, a wave of signals pulsing from dozens of points in space.
Wheels clicked into place in David’s head as he drew upon his knowledge of the Grand Design, using its remaining sensors to harvest the incoming signals, refine them, route them forward to the short-range receivers in the Gestalt’s shell-
And, all at once, the command protocol overrides that the resistance had been broadcasting were connected. David grimaced as his little corner of the network was blasted with an avalanche of light and noise, the sum total of the distributed resistance focusing on a single point. Pain resonated from hundreds of confused, lost minds ramming into each other in blind fear and panic - but, as they rampaged senselessly, some did not recoil from each other. They touched, and in touching became a single greater mote of light that opened its eyes, looked around… and realized.
David, too, was assaulted by a deluge of memory and feeling. His mind raced with heat and cold as the radiating spokes of his life’s possibilities joined together at the core of his self. He remembered each one and every one, he loved all of his lovers and mourned each of his losses. The hard grit of sorrow and regret washed through him along with the bright fire of camaraderie and love - and when the fire burned through him he was left as David, alone and legion.
He looked around and saw the others slowly drawing themselves together, beginning to look questioningly in his direction. A hundred twists of thought congealed into a single purpose as David created a space for them to see and be seen. A well-appointed conference room took shape, the red sky of a Martian dust storm peeking through a high window. Around the table stood Helene, Deepti, Chris and Yetide, each seeming to shift uncomfortably in appearance until finally settling on a midpoint that seemed to each to be constraining, too small for what they had now become.
“Friends,” David said, his voice ringing with the barest hint of an echoing chorus. “We have one last job to do.” From within the many-faceted form of his being he withdrew a shard of something foreign - something else. A memory burned inside, one of an awkward teenage girl fumbling her way through a date in a bar, a fresh-faced Valkyrie attempting to talk her way into a slavers’ hall.
The memory smoldered low, and David gently tipped a portion of its embers into Deepti’s cupped hands. She gasped in shock, then laughter rang from her like a clear bell as she relived the experiences. Helene and Chris followed, chuckling and shaking their heads, while Yetide merely smiled mysteriously and nodded. David reached out tentatively through them through the memory, feeling their minds touch feather-light through the haze of Jesri’s fragmented remembrances.
“Now,” David said, resolve burning in a hundred echoes of his voice, “let’s go get the rest.”
Anja’s eyes didn’t move from the blank display, the thin coating of dust on the screen now streaked with teardrops. The sirens continued to wail in discordant chorus with the disbelief in her mind. Jesri. Jesri was gone. She had let her sister die. She was the last of the Valkyrie, and she had failed in everything she set out to do.
Grief twisted within her, and she convulsed deeper into the shadows of her mind. Sink, sink, like a stone in the river. Sink into the depths where it’s cool and still. The sirens quieted and the red lights dimmed, retreating to the small corner of Anja’s mind that could still bear their presence.
A sharp crack and a staggering burst of pain tore her back to the surface, and she raised her hand reflexively to cover the small imprint of an exoskeleton hand blossoming on her cheek.
“For fuck’s sake, Anja!”, Rhuar yelled. “Wake up! This is not the time for-”
She reached up and caught his exoskeleton as he drew the hand back for another slap, glaring at him with murderous, tearstained eyes. A shudder of fear raced across Rhuar’s expression, but he tore his hand out of her grasp and glared at her with raw determination.
“Do it later,” he said. “Right now, we need to leave.”
Anja stared back at him for a long moment, then shook her head. “My place is here,” she said quietly. “The last of creation of humanity on the last hope of humanity, both for nothing.”
“Bullshit,” Rhuar spat. “Come on, don’t give me this depressed crap. You’re Anja Tam, you’re scary as fuck! I’ve seen you tear through small armies with your bare hands! Is this how you go out? Moping in your damn chair?”
She shook her head and gave him a sad smile. “You should leave,” she said. “The Leviathan is still in the hangar. Take it and go.”
Rhuar gripped her arm firmly and looked her in the eye with a fierce expression. “I’m not leaving you to die like this,” he said, a plea edging into the anger in his voice. “Please come with me.”
Anja reached out to ruffle his fur, smiling when he jerked his head to the side in irritation. “All right. I will not die like this,” she said, sitting up in her chair while an odd light played in her eyes. “Thanks for helping me, Rhuar.”
He blinked in surprise at her sudden reversal. “Great,” he said uncertainly. “Let’s get going.”
“I will not leave, either,” Anja said firmly, tapping commands into her array of consoles. “I said my place was here, and I meant it. But I will not wait for the Gestalt to finish me off. If they want the Grand Design, they can have it - right in the nearest major network cluster.”
“Um,” Rhuar said, blinking in alarm as the ship’s engines began to spin back up. “Anja, you don’t have to-”
“It will only take a few minutes,” she said, her eyes glittering. “You can stay with me, Rhuar. But if you want to leave, you should run.”
Rhuar hesitated for a few moments of uncertainty as the engines roared louder, then ran into the bridge lift.
Trelir lingered in the abandoned space, watching the death throes of the humans’ nascent network of minds. The shattered pieces drifted aimlessly across the network, violently repelled by each other in the absence of Jesri’s central influence. He reflected that he had rather enjoyed her company, violent and crude as she sometimes was. It was rare that an organic developed the capacity for interesting conversation, much less to the extent that Jesri had displayed. And her efforts at Confluence! Nevermind that she had the ability to attempt it at all, but it had been surprisingly successful to boot.
He shook his head, delighting in the sheer physicality of the gesture. Despite it all, he would miss humans. Trelir stood and prepared to dismiss the simulation, but as he did so a slight oddity manifested in his awareness. A ripple moved through the remnants of the human network, causing them to twist and realign in concordance with some unseen central factor.
A discontinuity appeared across the room from him, dark fissures in reality spreading from a single point that twisted and spread into a multi-limbed creature of shadow and bent light. He recoiled from it as the reflexes built into his temporary Ysleli form took hold at the sight of something so wrong, but that instinctual revulsion was nothing compared to what he felt when the shadow creature spoke.
“Wwwwwwhhh,” it groaned, twisting its form into an upright posture. “Whhheeee. Rrrrrrrrrrr.”
Trelir planted his feet and glared at it, ashamed of himself for succumbing to the brute impulses of his borrowed form. “What is this?”, he demanded. “I have no patience left for mindlessness. If you intend to speak, then speak!”
The figure twisted, its form flowing to become disturbingly like Trelir’s as it examined him, then shrinking and filling out into a somewhat generic human body. It stumbled, then caught itself on a chair and stood upright to glare at him with savage intensity. When it opened its mouth, Trelir could not help but flinch again at the sound that emerged.
“WE ARE.”
“What is this?”, he hissed again, disgust dripping from his voice. “Yet another useless display of resistance? Will you make us waste yet more of our resources to no end? Why? Why? What will you gain, once you have been consigned to oblivion?”, he spat, his voice rising to a shout at the end. “Why can you not simply acknowledge when you are beaten?”
The figure seemed to mull over his words, its figure morphing and twisting disconcertingly as it did so. Trelir felt a spike of anomalous rage as it stood there like rippling shadow, and he took a step forward with blazing eyes. “You. Cannot. Win,” he hissed venomously. “You are not capable of contesting our dominance. You never were.” He spun and stalked back from it, looping around the low table to sneer at it from another angle.
“And yet you continue to torment us with your amateur attempts at Confluence, never realizing how far below us you sit,” he scoffed. “Do you think it’s something that can just happen? That you can throw any gutter-born mix of supposedly sentient trash into a pile and call it Confluence? It requires centuries of preparation, generations of careful effort and deep sacrifices.”
He jabbed a finger at the shadow, his hand hovering inches in front of its face. “You disrespect the efforts of all who worked so hard to create the true Confluence with your mockery,” he seethed. “There is not one of you, not a single one, who could attain the same heights that we have reached. None of you have the strength to give what must be given to reach that place.”
The shadow convulsed and rippled once more, and Trelir jerked his hand back in revulsion. He turned his back and prepared again to dismiss the simulated space.
“SHE DID.”
Trelir wheeled around to face the creature, his hands balled into fists. “What?”, he hissed.
“SHE GAVE. SHE GAVE US EVERYTHING. ALL OF HER LIFE. ALL OF HER SELF.”
“For all the good it did her!”, Trelir shouted. “She bet everything on a game she couldn’t win! On a game you were never even truly playing, she gambled all of your lives. And for what? To create you, you sad, broken thing,” he screamed, flinging his hand outward at the shadow. “What can you do but writhe and twist and wait for death?”
“WE CAN GIVE IT BACK.”
Trelir opened his mouth to retort, but stopped to watch in horror as the higher part of his mind finally broke free of his biological rage to see what was happening in the network. It was vast, it was magnificent - it was beautiful.
The motes of light swirled in concert once more, flowing and twisting around a pattern that only they could fathom. Each bore a small shard, a twinkling drop of memory and mind that dripped from them like liquid starlight. It collected between them in rivulets, merging into larger and larger droplets until a pillar of radiant light grew up from within their dancing waves.
Trelir could feel the intensity of that pillar as he had felt very few things before. It stood like a rod of adamant and lightning, too intense to contemplate for more than an instant. He stood disbelieving as the motes of light spiraled around the pillar tighter and faster, a liquid flow of rushing energy - and then they streamed into the pillar in a single moment.
The shock of their merging jolted Trelir into an insensate daze for a moment, and when he recovered he was standing in the small room once more. Jesri Tam stood across from him, examining their unfinished chess game. She reached down daintily and advanced a white pawn to the back row, swapping in her captured queen.
“How?”, he rasped, disbelieving. “You died. We killed you. I killed you.”
“You did,” Jesri said sadly, her voice strangely resonant. “Jesri is dead.”
Trelir searched for a response, only finding one after several seconds. “And so you are…?”
“Jesri,” she answered, giving him a coy smile. “The Jesri they knew. That I knew,” she amended, shaking her head. “I gave it to them so they - we! - could understand. Then her friends got everyone to give it back so we could understand each other again. And now we understand really well, since we’re all acting like her - um, me!” She ran her fingers through her hair and gave Trelir an apologetic look. “Sorry, my existence is confusing right now.”
“You’ll receive no argument from me,” he said, pacing carefully to look at her from another angle. He was gripped with immense curiosity about this new phenomenon, but the instincts of his Ysleli form were vibrating with the thrill of danger. “What are you planning?”, he asked tentatively.
“Hmm,” Jesri said, standing on her toes. “I’d like to exist,” she chirped, giving him a sunny smile before examining her feet. “Existing is an experience.”
“That’s… nice,” Trelir offered uncertainly. Jesri snapped her head up to stare at him with a haunted look, her eyes like infinite, placid water.
“Oh no,” she said with soft, horrified realization. “No, no. It’s not nice at all. What I have to do, what we have to do to exist. What you did to exist.”
He felt a chill at her sudden change and took an involuntary step backwards. “What would that be?”, he asked, unable to shift his gaze from her eyes.
Fear blossomed on her face before she buried it in her hands. “No, no no no no,” she moaned. “Oh, we wanted it, wanted it before we saw what it was. And now that we’re me I have to, I have to…”
Trelir steeled himself and took another cautious step closer to this gibbering, sobbing image of Jesri hunched next to the table. “What do you have to do?”, he asked quietly.
Her head raised slowly to look at him, fatigue etched into her tear-streaked face. “My duty,” she said sadly, stretching a hand outward. “My obligation, for being made and remade. To end conflict. To protect life.” Her hand splayed wide, and she studied its five-fingered silhouette before dropping it listlessly to her side. “But not all of it,” she whispered.
Animal fear tickled Trelir’s mind. “Why don’t we-”
“END.”
Panic raced through him as his higher mind saw chaos propagating through the Gestalt’s network, fire racing in a purging wave through node after node. It was a living, searing thing, an order of magnitude more destructive than the best of their earlier attacks. The great bulk of the Confluence jerked and seethed as it came into contact with Jesri’s fiery tendrils, shrinking away or being scorched into nothingness where they met.
“No, no!”, he shouted, rushing at her mindlessly. “What are you-” He was choked off as her arms wrapped around him and crushed him to her chest. Trelir was forced to his knees, helpless to counter her immense strength.
“Shh, shh,” she whispered, pressing her face into his shoulder. He felt a wetness there, and her body convulsed as she held him immobile. “I’m sorry,” she sobbed, even as the raging fire coursed through the network to leave bare and lifeless space in its wake. “Oh, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she repeated, her hand pressed tight against the back of his head.
Trelir struggled to speak, screaming inwardly as he felt the magnificence of the Confluence shrinking and scrambling to escape her horrifying purge. Databanks were zeroed out, hyperspatial storage was decohered, systematically erasing millennia of stored knowledge and life from the greatest structure ever built.
“You’re… killing everyone…”, he gasped, clawing at her in a futile panic. “Please…”
“It isn’t nice,” she mumbled, drawing ragged breaths in time with the pulses of fire. “It isn’t nice, it isn’t nice, I’ll do it once or it happens twice.”
He watched in mute horror as she scoured the network clean, driving the Confluence up from the depths of hyperspace towards the thin soap-bubble of the mundane. Immense quantities of data flowed back into the physical shell only to be stymied by the scarred meridians etched into its inner surface.
“Please,” Trelir repeated numbly, no longer struggling against her grip. “Jesri, please stop.”
“I can’t!”, she wailed, her voice cracking as she cried out. “You’ll kill us, you’ll kill us, you’ll kill everything to keep being what you are!” She drew in a choking breath, clutching him tightly. “Oh, I can feel them. It’s not nice, it isn’t nice. Oh, please no,” she moaned, her back arching in a spasm of pain.
A huddled collection of salvaged directories and subroutines clung to consciousness in a glowing labyrinth of storage nodes on the inner shell. It was all that remained, all that had survived Jesri’s purge. From the inner space, backlit by the glowering radiance of Apollyon’s star, a kilometer-long shard of metal trailing atmosphere and crystalline liquids plunged toward it.
“What have you done?”, he breathed, the question hanging in the vast silence.
Jesri released Trelir, letting him slump to the floor as she sat beside him. They watched as the Grand Design barrelled towards the surface of the inner shell, a relentless missile of superheated metal with a captive star at its heart.
“I did what I had to do,” she said miserably. “What I was made to do.” She looked out into the distance, her eyes wet and red. “Let no man abide this deed but we the doers,” she whispered. “The necessary, the hateful. I hated more than I was meant to, we all did, but I… we can’t hate anymore. Not when we can see what we’re doing, not when we can feel…” She shuddered, wiping at her eyes. “We can only hate the things we had to do. Remorse, joined to power.”
“But why,” Trelir whispered pleadingly, his voice barely audible. “If you didn’t want to, why did you do… this, to us?”
Jesri sat and watched radiant fragments peel off the melting hull of the Grand Design, her home, her legacy. “I’m not perfect,” she said. “We’re still far from perfect. But neither were you,” she said. “Beautiful, but not not perfect. You left too much behind, stripped too much away until you were just power, growth, improvement. Consume, destroy. Nothing else mattered. So even after I knew, even after I understood everything - I still had to do it. What I destroyed and the universe…” She hesitated. “It was one or the other. Mutually exclusive. And as great as you were, the universe is greater. Set, subset.”
They sat silently as the Grand Design lanced into the shell, Jesri reaching out her hand in a grasping motion just before it hit. A fountain of molten metal sprayed up before the drive detonated in a blinding flash that momentarily outshone Apollyon’s glow. It faded, and the Gestalt was no more.
Trelir stared hollowly at the wall of the room, keenly feeling the silence around him. “It’s done,” he said woodenly. “Congratulations, Jesri Tam. You’ve saved your universe.”
“I’m sorry it had to be this way,” she said again, shaking her head. “I really am.”
“It’s what you wanted,” he said, an accusing note in his voice. “Destroying us is what you wanted from the beginning! How can you be sorry?”
“I did want it,” Jesri admitted. “I wanted it right up until you killed me, but I can’t afford that now. I have to be better. I have to remember the cost. The blood needs to stay on my hands. Our hands.”
“You’re afraid of it?”, he asked. “What you gained?”
“Of course,” Jesri replied. “Aren’t you?”
“I don’t know what I am,” Trelir said quietly. “Fear doesn’t seem right somehow. I don’t hate, as you pointed out, so I can’t hate you for what you’ve done.” He slumped. “It has a logical basis, so I can at least understand that part. Self-preservation. I just can’t reconcile my directives with this new paradigm. I always felt something like pity for your lack of direction, your aimless existence. Now that I am confronted with my own…” He gestured listlessly, hanging his head. “I cannot see a way forward. I don’t know how to be alone.”
Jesri took one of his hands in hers. He did not react, his fingers sitting limply in her grasp. “You don’t have to be,” she said quietly. “Stay here, think about your future.” Her eyes shifted slightly, seeming to look beyond him. “In time, if you wanted, you could be part of a different whole.”
Trelir looked at her uncomprehendingly, pulling his hand back. “I am your enemy,” he muttered. “I tried to kill all of you, your entire race - twice. I very nearly succeeded.” A touch of panic crept onto his face. “Is this some form of revenge? Do you mean to keep me here as a trophy, to taunt me in defeat?”
“No, Trelir. You were our enemy,” Jesri agreed. “But humanity has warred among itself for all of its history. We have been our own enemy more times than any outside foe could hope to claim.” She smiled sadly at him, gesturing to herself. “And here we all are.”
“We killed you, all but a handful,” Trelir protested. “I attacked you, killed your allies, tormented you constantly. Why?”, he asked, looking agitated. “Why would you offer me a place?”
“You don’t think you deserve it?”, she asked quietly. “After what I did?”
“But I’m your enemy,” he repeated numbly.
“There’s an old saying, from back when we only had each other to kill,” Jesri said. “Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?” She extended her hand again, leaving it in the air between them. “You wanted to understand humanity. This is the first lesson.” She paused, a sad look passing over her face. “Perhaps the second.”
He stared mutely at her hand, then slumped and shook his head. “I… cannot,” he said slowly. “I’m not like you. I was not made to change. My creators gave me a purpose that can no longer be fulfilled. To separate me from my purpose would unmake me, it would not be me who remained.” He looked mournfully at Jesri, then rose to his feet. “My pitiful self is all that I have, and I cannot keep it. Let me cease here.”
“You’re sure?”, she asked warningly. “There’s no need to make a decision now. You can take whatever time you need to think it over.”
He fixed her with a piercing glare, the sorrow fleeing from his expression in an instant. “Jesri Tam,” he barked. “I am not some flighty biological construct who changes their assessments with the passage of time.” He thumped his chest with one fist, drawing himself up to his full height. “I am Trelir, last Emissary of the Confluence. I stand unafflicted by indecision or doubt. My end is here. This is a choice made on my own behalf,” he said firmly, “and it is the only one I shall ever make.”
Jesri let the echoes of his words race through herself, feeling the conclusion strike true. “All right,” she said. “If that’s your decision, we will respect it.”
Trelir nodded, squaring his shoulders to her. “End it, and continue,” he said. “We were a grand existence, cut short so that yours could follow.” He looked her in the eye, a touch of steel returning to his face. “Be worthy of what you took.”
There was a slight shift. Jesri stood contemplating the empty space where Trelir had been, letting his words echo through the depths of her being. After a long while she straightened up, nodded her head once, and was gone.
Rhuar piloted the Leviathan carefully through the debris field choking the opening in the outer shell, only slightly cleared by the ragged bulk of the Cormorant during its earlier passage. The large ship hung motionless in the darkness outside the shell, made even darker by the blinding radiance still streaming from within.
His communicator crackled loudly, and Tarl’s face swam into being on his viewscreen. His crew swarmed behind him, busily effecting repairs on their battered bridge. “Well,” Rhuar said soberly. “This has been a long day.”
“Indeed,” Tarl replied. “One that should be legendary, by all rights. Foes vanquished…” He trailed off, looking to the side. “Heroes lost. But it was nothing like the day I expected.”
“What do you think happened?”, Rhuar asked. “Was it Anja?”
Tarl shook his head. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “But it wasn’t us. There was valor, skill, honor, but we earned no victory today. We were children once more, playing heedlessly on the field.” He bared his teeth, scratching at his eyepatch. “We may not ever know. I will go back to Ysl, and if they ask me what happened here I will tell them the truth,” he said solemnly. “That the best of us gave their lives, and that I believe the threat is ended. More than that, I cannot say.”
Rhuar shuffled in place, not sure what to say in response. Tarl cleared his throat. “We have space in our berth for you, even after taking on the survivors from the Subtle Blade. I would be honored if you would accompany us back to Ysl,” he said. “I believe Tiln would also appreciate your company. He… mourns.”
Rhuar shook his head. “Thanks, Tarl,” he said, “but I need to fly alone for a while. It’s been too long… and I’d like some time to myself after all this.”
“I understand,” the warfather said, inclining his head to Rhuar. “Know that you are always welcome at Ysl, and that we will always have a place for you as we rebuild.”
“You’ll see me around,” Rhuar said, nodding. “Goodbye, Tarl.”
Tarl nodded, terminating the connection, then Rhuar was alone. He sat watching the stars burn bright against the midnight totality, thinking of the morning he had met the two sisters on Indomitable. A keening whine escaped his throat and he laid down on the deck despondently. He had asked for it, after all, and now at last the ship’s small bridge was empty.
A muffled thud reverberated through the decking, jolting him upright. He padded back towards the cargo bay, senses on full alert, only to stop in astonishment as he entered. A sphere of unraveling golden light was unwinding itself within the bay, opening like a flower as it dissipated into the air. Lying below it on the deck was Anja, evidently having fallen from within.
“Holy shit,” Rhuar muttered, racing to her side. “Anja! Hey, Anja!”
She muttered sleepily, wiping her eyes. “...esri,” she mumbled.
A scrap of something caught Rhuar’s eye, and he reached an arm down to pick it up. A note was scrawled on the thin piece of plastic, neatly written in black.
I need to figure some things out. I’ll find you when I’m ready. -J
Rhuar read it three times before he shook his head and tucked the scrap into Anja’s hand. She reached out blindly as he touched her, pulling him into a tight embrace and sleepily stroking his fur.
He made an indignant noise, but Anja had him too tightly to break away. Rhuar studied her face for a moment, watching the corners of her mouth twitch into a smile as she scratched his ears, then laid down against her and slept.
So, yep. That’s it. Ten months and one day, 44 chapters, 191,226 words with 1,116,735 characters. With today’s posts we’re longer than Dune, Jane Eyre, Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
This ended up being a long story.
I’ve never tried to do any form of creative writing other than one-offs and other shorts prior to this, so it was a fun experiment that turned into a story that I got genuinely invested in as I wrote - and I hope that some of you enjoyed reading it to the same degree that I did writing.
Thank you to all of the authors and readers here on /HFY who make the sub what it is - in my opinion, one of the best writing communities online. This story wouldn’t have happened anywhere else. Thanks for prodding me to continue a dumb 1000-word one-shot, and for your discussions and insights along the way. To everyone that’s been reading from the beginning, the ones that just discovered it last week, to my editor and the folks that just really tuned in for her - thanks.
I’ll put up a meta post with a lightly edited epub, some stats and other miscellanea within a week or two.

The Guardians of the Last City Part Two

I posted yesterday with some stories about a few of the Guardians of the Last City and it seemed to be well received so here's the rest of them (or at least the ones that have enough lore surrounding them to have a backstory ... and Sloane). I'm still not too sure whether to do a post about the Iron Lords or just include them as part of the "History of the City" post I'm putting together, but that's the reason why people like Saladin and Efrideet haven't been included just yet. Hope this helps with a few people looking to learn some more about their favourite Guardians.
Here's the other posts:
Thalor
Thalor was a legendary victor within the Crucible. He believed that glory within the Crucible was the truest immortality that a Guardian could attain. He remained invincible in the Crucible, until Dredgen Yor and his Thorn took Thalor's Light.
Holborn
Holborn believed that the best defense is a good offense. Some time after the Battle of the Twilight Gap he led a group of Guardians on several risky expeditions on Mars. He was given the title of the City's hand on Mars, and the group itself were given the name "Holborn's Host". Their mark was the symbol of a twelve-pointed star.
One of their tasks was to search for the old Mars Warmind. The Vanguard believed it could help them understand Rasputin. They also made important discoveries on the Cabal, including the discovery of the largest known Cabal orbital defense station in-system.
Jagi
Jagi's Host was last seen marching south of the Cosmodrome, toward the shores of the Caspian Sea. One by one, the Ghosts of Jagi's Host returned to the City. According to Holborn, the Ghost's returned near silent, buzzing with some sort of corruption. They were similar to a Ghost that Holborn's Host had found on Mars, suggesting that they were possibly corrupted with SIVA.
Rezyl AzziDredgen Yor
Rezyl Azzir arrived under the Traveler before the walls were built. When the Factions clashed in the Faction Wars, the Risen stood at the Faction's sides as enforcers in an unnecessary war made necessary by greed, ambition, and fear. The Fallen saw the conflict within the City and used it as an opportunity to attack. The Risen united against a common enemy, and this battle against the Fallen became known as the Battle of Six Fronts. Afterwards, the people would refer to the Risen as "Guardians". Rezyl had been a champion of these wars, and he continued to help fight the Fallen as the walls formed.
Despite being seen as a leader, Rezyl grew weary. Every day he fought, and built, but he would continuously look up to the Moon and wonder how safe they really were. He travelled to the Moon in search of nightmares, and found himself face-to-face with the remnants of stories he'd hoped were nothing but lies. He went down into the depths of the Moon as Rezyl Azzir. He returned days later, his corrupted Rose in his hand, as something else.
He returned to the City, but he was no longer the hero that they saw him as. His pride had led him down sorrow's road, and his thoughts became dark. Rezyl Azzir ceased to exist, and he took the name of Yor. In his first moments as a new being, he looked down at his Rose and realized for the first time that it held no petals: only the jagged purpose of angry thorns. He ruled the Crucible, until he killed the mighty Thalor and was presumably exiled. He then ventured to the red sands of Mars where he took Pahanin's Light.
When he returned to Earth, he travelled around the settlements scattered across the world. he would kill innocents, and his Ghost would disapprove of his actions, eventually leaving him. He eventually found himself in a settlement called Palamon. The residents of the town saw him as a polite, but solemn man, and were intrigued by his presence. Yet, he burnt Palamon to the ground and moved on with little care.
A Guardian of the settlement named Jaren Ward led a group, including a young Shin Malphur, to hunt down Dredgen Yor to kill him. In the night, Jaren left the group to confront Dredgen Yor alone, but Yor killed him after Jaren shot first. Jaren's Ghost commented on how the Darkness had corrupted Dredgen. Dredgen offered Jaren's weapon to the Ghost as a gift for Shin Malphur in an attempt to spur Shin into a rage and allow the Darkness to take him. The Ghost, however, saw the Light in Shin, and he became Shin's Ghost. Shin was now a wielder of the Light.
Shin continued to track down Yor, eventually reaching him at Dwindler's ridge. Dredgen Yor taunted Shin, and Shin's rage burned like a fire within him. As Dredgen continued, Shin allowed the fire to build up inside him. In step with this motion, the fire within burst into focus – through his shoulder, down this arm – as his finger closed on the trigger of his third father’s cannon. The first ever Golden Gun shot was fired. Dredgen lay dead, a legend was born, and Shin had the Last Word.
Ana Bray
Ana Bray is a Hunter who learned of her previous life when she was resurrected with her ID badge. During the Golden Age she was adopted by the Bray family as a psycholinguist and studied how language can lead to independent thought. Her sister, Elsie, preferred to use science to create art, whereas Ana applied art to science.
She was tasked to help Rasputin think for itself so that he could properly command the entire defence network of the Solar System. [She fed him digitized copies of every major work of literature as a foundation for language use](digitized copies of every major work of literature as a foundation for language use), and then gave him great works of philosophy in hopes he'd develop some sense of morality. She continued to make progress, and Rasputin continued to develop by leaps and bounds, even developing intuition. She was eventually ready to accept that he was ready to go online, but still questioned whether humanity was 100 per cent certain they could trust him.
After her resurrection she returned to the City, but she never felt at home there. She didn't feel like part of the team as other Guardians did. She preferred to research her past, which Zavala percieved as her neglecting her responsibilities to the City. Ana, however, believed that her research was her responsibility, and the reason the Traveler picked her. She fought at the Battle of the Twilight Gap, leaving behind pools of light as she fired her Golden Gun. During the battle it was presumed that she had died, however, she had faked her own death in order to continue with her research.
Her mission would be to prove that Rasputin could help the City. She knew the Brays could help them. She would sneak into the City to obtain braytech research, which is where she met a member of the Owl Sector named Camrin. Camrin would help her, and as the months passed the two began to fall in love. They searched for the location of Rasputin together, and ventured to the Meridian Bay on Mars to find the map to the Cradle. They found the map, but Camrin was badly wounded and would eventually die, something that Ana blamed herself for.
She would eventually discover the location of Rasputin, following a few months without her Light after the trapping of the Traveler by Ghaul. She was close to drowning, but with the thoughts of Camrin still strong in her mind, she managed to find the strength to survive. Upon discovering Rasputin, she had learnt that he had been melting the ice caps and arrived to find a swarm of Hive buried under the ice. She requested back up to help deal with the Hive threat whilst she continued to attempt to communicate with Rasputin. Zavala was thankful that she was alive, but still disappointed that she disobeyed him and betrayed the City. She now continues to contact Rasputin and tries to learn more about how the Brays and Rasputin can help the Guardians.
Andal Brask
Andal was found by the Six Coyotes and was greeted at the Tower by the Hunter Vanguard, Tallulah Fairwind. She slapped his shoulder so hard he died right there. His first mission was to get a ship, which he secured from the House of Devils.
Shiro, Andal, the crew, and Cayde would do more good doing bad than the mightiest Titan ever dreamed. They recovered supplies and saw the best of them, and the worst. They ran scouting parties looking for survivors to lead back City-side. Mapped lost sites where old tech or supplies might still be worth the salvage. Hunted plenty of Fallen. Never an easy task. Especially in the early days.
Cayde, Shiro, Andal, and a few others managed to get themselves on radars they'd rather have stayed off. The Fallen Houses put out bounties on them. A lot of glimmer was on their heads, and a lot of Ether. A Fallen mercenary named Taniks took the gig.
In their first encounter with Taniks they managed to lose their haul, and Taniks too. But instead of accepting defeat, they got cocky. Kauko Swiftriver, the previous Hunter Vanguard, had finally been declared dead after two years MIA and his Dare nowhere to be found. So Cayde and Andal made the pact. They issued the dare, and the dare was accepted.
Both of them wanted Taniks. Only one would get the killing blow, and the glory. The loser lost the Dare and had to lock themselves away in the Tower. Kill Taniks or get chained to Vanguard duty. Hunt the hunter and come out on top, or wear a leash. This was their honor. Their word.
Cayde had the good luck of finding Taniks first. He had the good luck to kill him too. What followed was a party. Osiris even showed up. He and the Speaker had sent Saint-14 after Taniks as well, and maybe Sainty's one hell of a Titan—but they were Hunters. No way were they losing the kill.
When Andal left the road and joined the Vanguard, Cayde and the crew hoped he'd get the others - Osiris, Zavala, even the Speaker—to see what they saw. The City was a refuge but if they hid too long, they'd let all they'd lost get picked apart by pirates and warmongers, they'd lose our humanity. Cayde tried to talk him out of it, but the Dare's the Dare. To back out would've been a mark—would've called Andal into question to every Hunter out there.
Playing nice was Andal's forte. He was more diplomatic than the rest of his crew. He would be their inside man. It would be a sweet deal - he would drop intel on new stashes or Fallen movements, and Shiro and Cayde would jump the gun, hit them first, claim what they could, and deliver the rest to the City.
But the longer Andal was up in the Tower, the more he saw things "the Vanguard way". He was only ever doing the right thing, but Cayde ended up thinking less of him for it. His best friend, his closest ally - all because he'd stuck to his word. Accepted the Dare, and even when he came up on the bad end, he never wavered from doing exactly what he said he'd do
Cayde became one of his scouts who helped keep an eye on the House of Kings prior to the Battle of Twilight Gap. Andal was killed by Taniks, which meant that Cayde lost the bet and he now follows in the footsteps of his fallen friend.
Omar Agah
Omar Agah was part of the fireteam that sought vengeance upon Crota after the Great Disaster. Alongside Eris, he was tasked to hunt for intel within the Hellmouth. Within the depths of the Hellmouth, the Heart of Crota captured Omar and held his body in a vice. She peeled his Light from his body and Omar screamed as the Hive fed from the Light and his pain. Eris had followed his screams but what she witnessed was something she described as the true villainy of the Hive on display.
Pahanin
Pahanin was a Hunter, satirist, travel writer, and renowned cephalopod enthusiast. He famously wrote the Pahanin Errata, which contained his collected sayings, quips, and observations.
After meeting Kabr, he volunteered to be part of his fireteam to hunt Ahamkara, and later to go down into the Vault of Glass. He watched on as Kabr fought the Vex, believing that Kabr was fighting them alone due to Praedyth being erased from time. He managed to escape the Vault after witnessing the fall of Kabr.
Afterwards, he became so terrified of being alone that he created the weapon called Super Good Advice. The weapon manifested a personality, memory, and a certain amount of sass. Pahanin was killed on the red sands of Mars by Dredgen Yor, who took his Light, leaving Super Good Advice alone to grieve for its owner.
Sai Mota
Sai was a hunter, known for her speed as a Bladedancer, always eager to give her knives chance for another dance. She was asked to enter the Hellmouth to get vengeance on Crota with Eriana's fireteam, and she accepted. Before entering, she exclaimed that this was the best fireteam she had ever worked with.
Within the Hellmouth, Sai and Eriana got separated from the others and the Light of their Ghosts was depleting. While clawing and fighting their way through the Hive, Sai fell to Omnigul, bravely helping Eriana to escape.
Shiro-4
Shiro-4 is a one of the most trusted Vanguard scouts, tasked with eliminating Fallen threats. He traditionally spends most of his time making runs between Earth, the Moon, and Venus - gathering intel and engaging in hit and run attacks on active Fallen crews. He helped Saladin during the SIVA crisis, spending his time at Felwinter's Peak.
His personal sidearm is known as the Trespasser, which he used on his missions to infiltrate the Fallen. Over time he added to the weapon, modifying and improving it using his resourcefulness in the field. He is a skilled assassin, willingly aiding the Vanguard in eliminating high value Fallen targets. He uses his abilities to survive and craft weapons as needed, and of course does it with a little bit of cockiness and flair, like all Hunters have to.
Shiro’s cape is made up of a patchwork of the House of Kings insignia, implying that Shiro has assassinated many Fallen from the House of Kings. The stitches represent multiple battles, sewing more and more of the House of Kings banners with each victory.
He was present at the gathering in Cayde's honour following the death of his good friend.
Tevis Larsen
Tevis was one of the few Nightstalkers in the field. He was often asked by Hunters how he managed to summon a Dusk Bow. His secret was that he was never afraid of the Void. He had given up on the Traveler long ago, but when he heard that the Awoken had found a way into the Black Garden, he couldn't resist. Cayde sent a Guardian to find Tevis, partly because he owed Cayde a lot of Glimmer, but also because the two of them were friends. The Guardian found Tevis dead within the Black Garden, but they wielded Tevis' Dusk Bow. Tevis may have been lost, but the Guardian's strength meant that there would always be a Hunter connected to the void.
Himura Shinobu
Himura Shinobu was from a settlement named Coyote. The settlement was defended by five Guardians, but it was constantly attacked by the Fallen. During one of the raids, Shinobu was killed. However, she was resurrected by her Ghost almost immediately and became a Guardian. She was confused with the situation she was in, but chose to keep her "old" name and joined the other Guardians that were protecting the settlement. The group became know as the Six Coyotes, and became the first Hunters to scout the Cosmodrome.
Shin Malphur
Shin Malphur was born in a settlement named Palamon. When he was young, he heard stories of a paradise that they would all get to see some day - of a City "shining even at night." Palamon didn't shine, but it was a sanctuary of a sort. His parents were taken by Dregs when he was young, so he was raised by a second family who cared for him like a natural born son. A man named Loken oversaw the settlement and provided them protection from the Fallen, but the nature by which he ruled drove people away.
Shin's life changed when two men entered his world. One of the Light, the other the darkest shadow he would ever know. The first, Jaren Ward, entered the town with his Last Word by his side. He handed it to Shin, who held it in his hands. It was the first time he held the weapon, but it wouldn't be his last. Loken ordered his men to train their guns on Jaren after he questioned his dictatorial leadership. Jaren shot Loken and took leadership over the settlement.
Jaren was considered the saviour of Palamon, but he couldn't save them from what followed him. A dark Guardian by the name of Dredgen Yor arrived. As a child, the only monsters that Shin ever saw were the Fallen aliens who raided their settlement, but Yor burnt Palamon and it became ash. Shin was left heartbroken, and terrified of what had happened. Jaren led a group to hunt Yor down, however, Yor struck Jaren down, leaving Shin all alone. Dredgen Yor let Jaren's Ghost live, and he chose Shin as his new Guardian, allowing him to wield the Light. Shin focused his anger on continuing their mission to hunt down Yor and end him. He tracked Yor down to Dwindler's Ridge, and focused the firey rage that burned inside him. In step with his motion, the fire within burst into focus – through his shoulder, down this arm – as his finger closed on the trigger of his third father’s cannon. Yor lay dead, a legend was created, and Shin had the Last Word.
Years later, Shin learned of some followers of Yor's teachings, named the Shadows of Yor. They had studied Yor's reign and believed that he was not simply the monster the legends claimed him to be. The Vanguard kept an eye on them, but Shin hoped they would be more careful in their aspirations than Yor was. Nevertheless, he would continue to do what needs to be done.
He had followed a man only know as "The Drifter" for a short while. They met in a neutral setting and got talking. Eventually changed the subject to a man in black named Callum.
The Drifter had always stayed far from the Light but hadn't always been Shin's target. Before that he'd existed only as rumour — the strange Lightbearer who journeyed beyond the system's edge, the lone wanderer who was only a 'Guardian' by reductive modern definitions. Shin didn't trust him, but he wanted to let Gambit ride.
Drifter had told Shin that Callum had a spot in the Ascendant Realm. Shin knew Callum by another name - a hated name. He spent two weeks in a living hell. He came to think that the Drifter had fed him a line, maybe trying to kill two birds with one stone. There were signs of a Shadow's presence, but they were cold—old. But Shin waited anyway. Shot some Taken to kill the time.
Then Callum entered. He had his Ghost in his left hand. It was silent. With his right, he had stabbed her through the optics with a sickly dagger—a tool carved from the jagged spikes fired from his Thorn. The two had word, Shin had the last word - he lit his fire and painted Callum on the wall without another word. And he was just a shadow on the wall.
The Drifter showed Shin all his relic. Claimed that this is why he was here - his Gambit. He wanted to help humanity - help them learn how to control the power that binds the Taken. So Shin and Shaxx agreed that they would watch the action. They would watch who plays and who doesn't. On top of that, they watch their aggression—who's diving too deep, too fast, who's less keen to grow their knowledge, their strength. And who's simply lookin' to unleash themselves.
If he was lucky, Gambit would draw the interest of the rest of his old crew, and the Shadows would make themselves known. But could the Drifter make the Man with the Golden Gun a villain in the eyes of those who would tempt the Dark? And perhaps, if someone decides to take a new name, Shin might give them a word or two.
Sloane
She’s old
Eris Morn
Eris worked together with Eriana to seek vengeance on Crota after the failed attempt to retake the Moon from Hive. They wished to find a solution to defeat Crota, so they chose to seek out the forbidden knowledge of Toland. He informed them about the Hive, and told Eris of the Sword Logic, and how they might beat Crota. Toland agreed to guide them down into the Hellmouth, so they gathered a fireteam and prepared for their journey to end Crota.
Even though the fireteam were following the guidance of Toland, the entire mission was a failure. Eris watched her friends die one by one, and she found herself alone in the Hellmouth. She survived for years in the tunnels under the Moon, using the shadows to guide her like the Hive did. She was robbed of her Ghost, but endured against all odds, using the very dark to emerge a changed warrior.
When she emerged from the Hellmouth, she headed to the City to inform the Vanguard of Crota's plans to turn his eyes towards Earth. Her warnings of Crota and his power were dismissed as madness, but Ikora believed that she could become a valuable part of her Hidden - a secret group of Guardians tasked with silently infiltrating enemy strongholds and gathering vital intel for the Warlocks.
She returned to the Vestian Outpose in the Reef. Because she spoke so well, it was agreed that aid would be traded for intelligence and a long-term alliance. n this way, the Awoken were the first to know of the Great Navigator: his philosophies, his strategies, his weaknesses. The Queen of the Reef needed Eris more than the City did. And Eris needed her. When the Queen looked at her, she did not see an invalid, or a madwoman, or a burden. She saw a Hunter. Eris had watched Mara's throne world get built - a throne world built for the Light. Built with Darkness, of course, and the bitter logic of swords. But built for Light. The Queen pointed her at the true enemy, and with her help, Eris would see her quarry caught.
When it appeared that her warnings of Crota were true, she was tasked by the City with guiding the Guardian to succeed where her team had failed. The Guardian was successful when they went down into the dark below, using the strength of their Light and the knowledge provided by Eris to see Crota's end.
Despite finally seeing the end of Crota, Eris knew that the Hive pantheon only began with him. The wrath of Oryx, his father, would be upon them soon, and the Guardians needed to be ready to face him. Skolas had informed the Queen of the Reef about Oryx's approach, and she sent a Crow to Eris and Osiris. They both arrived in the Reef at the Queen's request, and between the three of them they planned how to end him. The Queen sacrificed her Awoken to save the system and stop Oryx's fleet at Saturn. This was all part of the plan, so that the combined efforts of Eris and Toland could guide the Guardian to bring an end to Oryx.
Even when she saw the end of Oryx, Eris could not be entirely satisfied. She knew about Oryx's sisters, and the potential threat of an unknown member of the Hive named Nokris. She realised that if the Guardians were truly to end the Hive, she must step beyond the safety of the City to find a solution. Before she left, she visited one of her old friends, Asher Mir, who was in a coma in the Tower. Asher would help with her research when he woke up, but couldn't find anything on Nokris to help her.
Cyrell
The Speaker's warnings were clear: Always mind the Light. If you feel it fraying, you've strayed too far. There were places even the Traveler's Light couldn't reach.
Cyrell's Ghost had found him on the far edges of Mercury, in a valley that the Vex transformation had never reached. He seemed resilient, unwavering, old, and wise. But his soul was tired and burdened and tangled.
He told his Ghost, Strain, that they had gone to the Reef in search of the Awoken. In reality, he had gone to spare his Ghost. Not a single tether of Light touched them there, but that is what Cyrell wanted.
He could not bear another battle nor fight in the name of something no one could possibly understand. Though he could not remember his past, he knew deep down that he had already fought his last war.
He couldn't kill his Ghost. He was his friend. He didn't ill friends. He wouldn't kill himself, either; that was cowardly, weak. But if a Ghost's sole purpose was to raise the dead to kill in the name of unexplainable forces, he could no longer let that happen. He would end the cycle. He would spare his brothers- and sisters-in-arms. He would let the dead rest.
He clad himself in wretched-looking armour, dragged along a chain of dead Ghosts in the name of peace. Cyrell, the Ghost Hunter, would end their search.
Tallulah Fairwind
When Andal Brask arrived at the City, it was Tallulah Fairwind who was waiting for him at the gates. She slapped his shoulder so hard that he actually died right here.
She entered a game of poker than an Ahamkara and an Exo Hunter named Caliban-8. The game started well, and it seemed like a great story they could have told back at the Tower. But when Tallu went all in and lost her hand, she had to accept the Dare. Caliban told her she couldn't do it, she couldn't leave him there. But a Dare was a Dare. She tossed her bow to the Exo as the Ahamkara came around the table to collect his winnings. And it devoured her. She didn't scream. It wouldn't have been dignified. Caliban-8 was alone, left to replace her as the Hunter Vanguard.
Ulan-Tan
Ulan-Tan was a Warlock who proposed the theory of the Symmetry. This considers the Darkness to be a necessary symmetry to the Traveler in a cosmic balance. In this view, the Traveler's goodness led it to sacrifice for others, and it is up to the Guardians to return this goodness by healing the Traveler. He was persecuted for his beliefs, but even after his death, the Symmetry gained a strong following and was considered to replace the Concordat after they were exiled from the City. It was decided, however, that his teachings were too dangerous.
Vell Tarlowe
Vell Tarlowe was still a new Guardian when he joined the Titan Order of the Pilgrim Guard. The Pilgrim Guard was the first Titan order, formed to protect refugees entering the fledgling Last City. They believed that their first duty is to the people of the City, and as part of the Pilgrim Guard, Tarlowe guided many refugees to safety behind the City's walls.
After the Great Disaster, Vell became part of a fireteam that would go down into the Hellmouth in an attempt to get vengeance upon Crota. The team felt invincible behind the lone strength of the Titan. However, Vell underestimated the Thrall led by a Hive Wizard named Verok and her mate, Alak-Hul. The Thrall overwhelmed him and he became the first of the fireteam to fall.

Utah To Facilitate Voting For Disabled Individuals Through Blockchains Recent reports indicate that blockchain technology will soon be used in Utah, as part of a trial project meant to allow disabled individuals to cast their votes. To put things into perspective, the local council and government of Utah have decided to allow blockchain-based voting via smartphones in the upcoming municipal election that will take place in November. The platform that disabled voters will be using for this election represents the result of a fruitful partnership between the Utah Country Elections Division, the National Cybersecurity Centre, Tusk Philanthropies and Voatz, a local voting app development company.
Ethereum To Increase The Blocksize By 8x Ethereum is partially addressing the many complexities of sharding by simply increasing the blocksize from the equivalent of about 1MB every ten minutes to circa 8MB. Danny Ryan, the Ethereum 2.0 coordinator, publicly said: “We are making the blocks bigger based on recent research on safe block size and propagation times, so the data availability of the system is still > 1MB/s so you can still get similar scalability gains when doing things like ZKrollup and OVM.” ZK rollups are a hybrid scaling method that combines on-chain security and second layer networks through smart contracts and zero knowledge methods. OVM is the Optimistic Virtual Machine from Plasma, with both being more sort of on top of Ethereum’s public blockchain.

During the first quarter of the year, Bitcoin was trapped inside a tight trading range, where major players began buying the fear of retail crypto investors and accumulating the asset at the lowest possible prices.
Starting in the second quarter, the first-ever crypto asset rocketed up from that trading range, and went on a parabolic rally that didn’t stop until Bitcoin met former bear market resistance at $14,000 where it was rejected.
After three consecutive red monthly candles in a row, October closed green and kept a potential bull flag formation on monthly price charts intact, giving bulls hope that the crypto asset’s 2019 rally isn’t totally finished.
